A 41-year-old German palliative care doctor, referred to as Johannes M., has been jailed for life in a Berlin court over the murders of 15 terminally ill patients committed from 2021 through 2024. It was held that the doctor committed the crimes due to "a drive for power," administering the drug mixture to 12 women and 3 men that put them into coma and even setting up fires to conceal his criminal behavior. While admitting his guilt in 12 murders as an attempt to relieve the patients' suffering, the judge stated that the crime deserved extremely serious consequences, which means that the doctor would not be released until the term of his imprisonment expires and he has been banned from practicing medicine forever. Investigations into the deaths of another 76 people allegedly killed by the doctor have been initiated.
